The Marietta Police Department is reeling after one of its officers was arrested in an international ecstasy drug ring.
The officer was one of 33 people indicted by a Gwinnett County grand jury for allegedly shipping the drug from Canada to Atlanta.
Gwinnett District Attorney Danny Porter, who is prosecuting the case, said there were three levels to the international ecstasy ring. He described them as management, middle management and street level sales -- and he said Officer Isaac Saleumsy would have been at the top in management.
The district attorney said Officer Saleumsy was a very active member of the organization involved in the storage and distribution of the drug.
When a search warrant was served at his Cobb County condominium on Tuesday, Porter said a quantity of the drug was found. Thirty-three people were indicted following a six month investigation, including 17 people in Georgia. It was all part of an investigation that started in Gwinnett County and spread to Canada and several other states.
Investigators said the drugs were manufactured in Canada, taken across the border in Michigan, and transported, hidden in vehicles to Atlanta.
"During the course of the investigation, more than 65,000 ecstasy pills were seized, seven weapons as well as four vehicles and approximately $80,000 in US currency," said DEA Special Agent in Charge Rodney Benson.
This all started back in May when Gwinnett County police made a couple of street level busts. Wen they learned how big it was, they called in the multi-agency-HIDTA Task Force. Marietta police cooperated with the investigation for months, not letting on to Officer Saleumsy that he was under investigation.
